(FOX 5/KUSI) — A sinkhole larger than most passenger vehicles forced the closure of a San Diego intersection on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

The sinkhole was first reported around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, San Diego police said.

The sinkhole is at the intersection of Morena Blvd. and Sherman St.

Underground pipe ruptures created the sinkhole and flooded the intersection, authorities confirmed. The water has since receded.

A stretch of southbound Morena Blvd. was closed to traffic, with the closure expected to continue throughout the day, police said.

One lane of northbound and part of southbound Morena Blvd. remains open.

Police initially controlled traffic until city crews arrived on the scene. City crews are now managing traffic while others study and address the problem.

An SDG&E representative said 10 nearby businesses were issued a boil water notice, and that crews will work to restore water pressure.

Fifteen commercial customers are affected by the water mainbreak, the City of San Diego confirmed. Impacted customers can receive water from water wagons located on the 900 block of Morena Blvd.
