OAKLAND — Firefighters early Monday fought a three-alarm fire that broke out at a building in the downtown area, fire officials said.

Few details were available immediately. Firefighters were first called about 7 a.m. in the 1700 block of Broadway, near 19th Street, according to fire dispatchers. Initial reports confirmed by dispatchers indicated the fire was at a multi-story building, perhaps at least five stories.

About 40-50 firefighters were at the scene. Some people in the building got out on their own and others were escorted by fire crews. Fire officials said at least three people were injured.

Crews from more than one of the firehouses were responding. Smoke could be seen rising from Interstates 880 and 980.

BART closed its entrance at 19th Street and Broadway to the 19th Street Oakland station. The station remained open.

No other information was available immediately.
