BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield City Council is slated to approve a proposed two-year agreement between the city and its fire employees, leaving just the city’s police officers without a contract, according to the agenda for Wednesday.

The fire department employees, represented by the Bakersfield Professional Fire Association, recently concluded labor negotiations with the city, according to the agenda.

They agreed to a two-year Memorandum of Understanding for employees in the Firefighters and Engineers Unit and the Fire Supervisory Unit running from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027, city officials said.

The agreement includes a 2% increase for the first full pay period following approval by the City Council and a 1.6% increase for the first full pay period after July 1, 2026, according to city documents.

If the City Council approves the proposed agreements on Wednesday, all represented units with the city would be under agreement except for the Bakersfield Police Officers Association, the agenda said.

Josh Yates, the president of BPFA, said the contract with the city expired June 30, 2025. BPFA and the city came to an agreement in early January.

Yates said he hopes BPFA can continue working with the city as labor partners.

“We’re always striving to keep competitive wage here in Bakersfield,” said Yates. “We’re definitely here to work as partners but also striving to get something fair and competitive at least through Central Valley.

On Nov. 5, several Bakersfield police officers with BPOA attended the City Council meeting to demand a contract negotiation. They have been working without a contract for over 200 days as of Monday.

City staff thanked BPFA in the agenda for coming to an agreement in a “challenging budget environment” and said it will continue seeking agreements to have all units under contract.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Jan. 21 in Council Chambers at 1501 Truxtun Avenue, according to the agenda.
