Long Beach Board of Aldermen approves Castine Pointe traffic study before speed limit reduction decision

  • January 21, 2026

LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) – Before the city of Long Beach makes a speed limit reduction in the Castine Pointe subdivision, they want more research done in the area.

During Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, Ward 6 Alderman Pete McGoey discussed a speed limit reduction from 25 miles per hour to 20 after several residents reached out to him.

During the discussion, former Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford spoke at the podium and brought up a potential traffic study being done in the subdivision before making the speed limit reduction.

The board unanimously approved a traffic study to be conducted by the Gulf South Regional Planning Commission, which comes at no cost to the city.

Alderman McGoey says the study will provide a clearer picture of activity in the area.

“I think that’s a more prudent approach, not such a knee-jerk reaction, and it’ll give us a realistic picture on what’s going on out there as far as vehicle count, the logistics, the people who inhabit that area and maybe a truer picture in the end,” Alderman McGoey said following the meeting.

“We’ve got so many children now, we’ve got military families, we’ve got seniors with grandkids and so forth, so safety is extremely important,” Keith Clark said, who has lived in Castine Pointe since 2017.

City officials say there will be an increase in law enforcement in the subdivision to ensure safety.

If approved following the traffic study, it would be the third speed limit change in the city this year to date.
