The San Diego Padres have swung a few blockbuster trades over the course of the last few years. They’ve added top talent to their roster in the pursuit of a World Series title.

But these trades have completely depleted the Padres’ farm system. Rather than having a system loaded with talent, the Padres’ farm system ranks as one of the worst in the league.

But they were able to hit the jackpot and land one of the best players in international free agency to bolster their farm system.

According to a team announcement, the Padres signed international free agent shortstop Joniel Hernandez this offseason. Hernandez is the No. 13-ranked prospect in this international free agency class, per MLB Pipeline.

Hernandez, 16, is one of the youngest players in the class, but he’s also one of the best hitters. He’s already 6-foot-1 with incredible raw power. As he continues to fill out his frame, his power should skyrocket.

He’s a solid fielder with a good arm, but he makes his money as a hitter. There’s a good chance that Hernandez dominates rookie ball pitching and finds himself in Single-A sooner rather than later.

The Padres need to build up their farm system over the next few years as they look to sustain their success for the next decade and beyond. Adding players like Hernandez will push them in the right direction.
