(FOX 5/KUSI) — A middle school in San Diego’s Mira Mesa neighborhood issued a shelter-in-place for students and staff Tuesday afternoon after a reported threat, officials said.
According to a letter to families from Principal Erik Sullivan, Challenger Middle School received an anonymous phone call reporting a bomb threat around 9:40 a.m.
The school campus, located at 10810 Parkdale Ave., was immediately placed on lockdown to ensure the safety of students and staff, the letter stated.

Officers with the San Diego Police Department responded and conducted a sweep of the campus. School police also established a safety perimeter around the campus to keep traffic away while law enforcement completed their work.
The shelter-in-place status was lifted once officers determined the campus was safe for operations to resume.
Student dismissal was confirmed to happen at the regular schedule time of 3:05 p.m., the school stated in an updated letter.
“As an added precaution, School Police will remain in the community throughout the day,” Sullivan said in the update. “We appreciate your patience, understanding, and ongoing support as we continue to keep everyone safe on campus.”
