A federal agent fired shots after a chase near Los Angeles on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security said. DHS said on X that agents were conducting an immigration enforcement operation in Compton that targeted an undocumented man from El Salvador who had a final order of removal from 2019. The man was believed to be involved in human smuggling and had prior arrests for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, DHS said. The man “weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement” while trying to evade arrest and then an agent fired defensive shots, according to DHS. DHS said the man was not hit by the gunfire and was apprehended after trying to flee on foot. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was injured, DHS said. NBCLA reported the chase ended with a crash on 126th Street in nearby Willowbrook. The LA County Sheriff’s office said it was providing traffic control at the scene.
