San Jose police said one of its officers was shot following a carjacking on Wednesday.

Police said the shooting was related to an armed carjacking that happened just after 2 p.m. Officials have not yet said where the incident first unfolded, but the suspect was in Hollister around 3 p.m. prior to his arrival in San Jose, according to Hollister police.

“The suspect, allegedly driving a stolen green Corvette, abandoned the vehicle on Westside Blvd armed with a firearm,” Hollister police said. “The suspect led officers and deputies in a second pursuit that left the city limits.”

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office was also involved in the pursuit and said the California Highway Patrol had called them for help. The chase ended in San Jose near Highway 87 and Julian Street, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said.

CBS News Bay Area spoke to a witness at the scene who said he was driving on Notre Dame Avenue in San Jose when he saw two patrol cars speed past him and then stop at a nearby intersection.

“About 40 rounds of gunfire popped off,” Grant Messinger said. “It lasted maybe 30, 45 seconds of a firefight.”

Police have not yet confirmed the medical status of the department member or the suspect, but said the department member was taken to the hospital.

This is a developing story.
