Monday was the day in which we honor Martin Luther King Jr. But beginning at 7 a.m. and for many hours afterward, I had to listen to the sound of construction on the Normal Street Promenade, across the street from my home — trucks, heavy equipment and jackhammers banging nonstop.

According to the city’s Municipal Code, construction is prohibited on this day. The construction manager onsite told me that SANDAG and the city of San Diego approved the work.

He had no permit to show, nor were residents within 500 feet of the project informed of the intent to work on a federal holiday, as is also part of the municipal code. This is not emergency work, but part of an ongoing project.

A day in which we honor a great American who fought for civil rights is not just another Monday. Shame on the City of San Diego for trying to make it so.
