SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nevada Athletics) – Nevada Women’s Basketball couldn’t hold off San José State on Wednesday night in a close battle, dropping the road game, 60-57.
The teams were nearly even in a majority of the categories, with the Pack (7-12, 3-6 MW) shooting slightly better from beyond the arc and the Spartans (3-17, 1-8 MW) just ahead from the floor.
The biggest factor for the final result was free throws. Nevada went 6-for-12 from the line while San José shot 87.5 percent with 16 opportunities.
Tempo was high to start the game as each team was looking for control. Just over halfway through the opening 10, the Pack held the Spartans to a nearly three-minute scoring drought and went up by as much as five.
The Pack was holding a 17-15 lead into the second. Nevada lost some momentum in the beginning of second, not getting a shot to fall until three and a half minutes in.
San José State went on an 8-0 run and gained its first lead of the game. After two ties and five lead changes, the Pack was still in front, 34-32, at the half.
The Pack rolled into the second 20 with a 5-0 run to start and go up by seven. After six turnovers in the third quarter alone, San José State was able to close the gap and outscore the Pack, 15-12.
Nevada had better ball protection in the final quarter, with only one turnover. However, it was also the lowest shooting percentage from the floor for the Pack at just 28.6 percent.
On the other side, it was the highest for the Spartans with 44.4 percent.
With just 46 seconds remaining and Nevada up by one, San José State scored the final four points to close out the game.
Skylar Durley recorded her third double-double of the season, dropping 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Maia Rosarion went 3-for-4 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 for 10 points.
Nevada will return home to face UNLV on Saturday at 1 p.m.
