The final days of January are synonymous with offbeat celebrations, the quirky holidays that put the spotlight on fun foods, and concepts, and the sorts of uplifting things we seek in the heart of winter.

And on the last Tuesday of 2026, one of the tastiest and most tantalizing occasions will grace an eatery that has served Los Angeles for well over a century.

It’s Free Chili Day at Philippe the Original, which, yes, involves a gratis cup of Dolores Chili.

There is something to note before you queue up outside the Alameda Street icon on Jan. 27: You’ll need to purchase a French Dip sandwich to receive this appetizing offer.

Look also for samples of chili — Dolores Chili reps will be in the house, all to give away the piquant tastes — and other festive touches, including a host of “exciting giveaways” (mmm).

If you do go for a free cup of chili and your purchased French Dip sandwich, make room for saltine crackers on the side, an almost mandatory addition to this made-for-winter meal.

As for beans or no beans? That’s up to you, as are the toppings you’d like: Shredded cheese and diced onions are the chili-complementing possibilities.
