SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — We were joined on Midday Live by Patrick Rohan, CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital, and City of San Jose Vice Mayor Pam Foley. They talked about a transformative $1.3 billion expansion and modernization of the hospital and what it means for patients and the Bay Area community.
Hospital Expansion & Patient Care
The expansion represents a multi-year investment in the health of the community – the new facilities are designed to improve patient care and patient experience.
The building will be a 469,920-square-foot patient tower with 234 new suites, adding private rooms, ICU beds, and expanded women’s and children’s services. Construction will include a new parking garage.
There will be new surgical suites, cardiac labs, diagnostic areas, a central utility plant, and spaces designed for future growth – all to improve patient flow, safety, and experience.
Legacy & Community Roots
Good Samaritan isn’t just a hospital; it’s part of San Jose’s history. The land was once an orchard, generously donated by the Cilker family 60 years ago to build the hospital.
Over the decades, generations of families were born there, raised children there, and now bring their parents there for care.
That deep lasting connection to the community is rare, and the expansion ensures that legacy continues for future generations.
It’s wonderful to see how Good Samaritan continues that legacy, staying rooted in and serving the community.
People, Not Just Buildings
There’s a quote from HCA Healthcare’s founder that really resonates with us: ‘Bricks and mortar do not make a hospital; people do.’
This expansion is about supporting the people who deliver care every day – our nurses, physicians, and staff – by giving them spaces that truly work for modern medicine.
Private rooms, better layouts, and state-of-the-art technology all help our teams provide the safest, highest-quality care possible.
Jobs, Pride & Community Investment
This is a major commitment in the community. The project will create more than 1,500 construction jobs, supporting local families and skilled workers. These are local jobs, built by people who live here and take pride in this city.
San Jose is proud to partner with Good Samaritan on initiatives that expand healthcare access and improve quality of life for San Jose residents. In fact, Good Samaritan recently donated $3 million to improve access to shelter and affordable housing in San Jose. All of their investments don’t just benefit their patients, but also our neighborhoods and the regional economy as well.
Recent Milestone and Community Support
With construction jobs, infrastructure improvements, and strong partnerships with the hospital, this project strengthens both our economy and public health. It’s a great example of the city and the private sector working together to improve lives – not just today, but for future generations.
Good Samaritan Hospital’s expansion represents a major step forward in providing advanced, future-ready care for San Jose residents while supporting the local economy. For more information, visit goodsamsanjose.com
