FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — An investigation is underway in southeast Fresno after a woman was found badly hurt in an alley Thursday afternoon.

Fresno police say around 2:25 p.m., they received reports of a woman who was found in an alley in the neighborhood of Normal Avenue and Mayfair Drive.

When officers arrived, they found the woman with injuries to her upper-body.

She was immediately treated by EMS and taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

Fresno Police Lieutenant Brian Vaez said the circumstances of the incident are still unclear, and investigators are actively searching for witnesses.

Officers have been canvassing the area, knocking on doors and reviewing video from nearby homes and businesses.

“At this point, we’re not really sure exactly what happened,” Lt. Vaez says. “We’re hoping somebody comes forward and can give us a better picture of what occurred.”

It’s also unclear whether the injury was caused by a gun, a knife, or another type of weapon.

Authorities said they will know more after a medical examination.

No weapon or other objects have been recovered from the scene, though the area is still being investigated.
