Garden club discusses school garden
The Carlsbad Garden Club will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 6 and will host Bob Lutticken for a presentation about the evolution and success of the Abraxis School Garden in Poway. Rotary offers scholarships; seeks donations
After 28 years the Carlsbad Hi-Noon Rotary is again offering scholarships to high school seniors living or attending school in Carlsbad who are going to college or vocational school. LA JOLLA: Rotary members paint a school in Ensenada
The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary recently organized 65 rotarians and rotaracts (college students) to charter a bus and paint a preschool in Ensenada. This is the 9th year that the La Jolla Rotary worked with Rotarians in Ensenada to upgrade and improve a school facility in their community. The preschool has 300 children; about 100 of them attended the work project with their families. The California Surf Museum’s exhibit, “Surf Art – Exploring Californias Coastal Culture” runs through Feb. 1 at 312 Pier View Way. The dual exhibition at the California Surf Museum and Oceanside Museum of Art explores the influence of surfing on art inspired by the beach lifestyle. Art exhibit features stories of homeless people
The Oceanside Public Library runs an art exhibit,The Road I Call Home by Randy Bacon, which documents through photographs the stories of 32 homeless people of all ages from Jan. 29 to March 13 at the Civic Center Library. A reception and film screening exploring the exhibit, with a discussion featuring Jordan Verdin of Humanity Showers will be at 5 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Civic Center Library, where free copies of When We Walk By will be offered, while supplies last. Mormon Battalion Commemoration
The free, annual Mormon Battalion Commemoration is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 31 at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. The living-history reenactment commemorates the January 1847 arrival of the Mormon Battalion, during the Mexican-American War and played a significant role in early San Diego history. Battalion members helped build roads, repair public buildings, construct a courthouse, dig wells and provide labor for the frontier community. Event highlights include a Children’s Legacy Parade, where kids dress in their ancestors’ pioneer-era clothing of 1847 and march around the Old Town Plaza, honoring their ancestors courage and service.
