FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Your new years goals might seem like they’re getting further away.
“You’re going to get about 43% to 88% of people dropping off their New Year’s resolution,” said Heather Cowan, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with Kaiser Permanente in Fresno.
Health experts say there are several reasons people tend to fall off their New Year’s goals, such as not fully fleshing out the details of their resolutions or setting goals too high.
“I think sometimes, they underestimate the resistance or the barriers that they’re going to encounter,” said Cowan.
There are ways to avoid burnout and build back your motivation. It starts with reframing our mindset.
“Let’s solidify it, make it more detailed,” said Cowan. “The more exact, measurable and detailed it is, the more likely we are to continue to pursue it.”
Setting up a support system can also help us achieve our goals.
“When we establish accountability, we’re increasing our level of commitment to a lifestyle change or a goal that we want to make,” said Cowan. “I think it also gives us a source of encouragement.”
If you’re starting to feel discouraged, Cowans says now is a good time to reassess and reset your goals and give yourself a little grace.
