A rally to save public transit from a looming funding crisis will happen across five of the Bay Area’s nine counties, with a transit caravan kicking off in San Francisco Friday morning.

The rally, which launches the Connect Bay Area campaign with the goal of bringing attention to the fiscal cliffs that threaten local transit agencies, will make its way through Alameda, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties before ending in Santa Clara County.

In addition to raising awareness, the goal also is to get enough signatures to qualify a regional sales tax measure to fund public transit for this November’s ballot.
