The Oakland Police Department issued an update Monday afternoon regarding the in-custody death of Douglas Martin, a former Oakland Raider and Tampa Bay Buccaneer whom police say was involved in a residential break-in over the weekend.

According to OPD, Martin, 36, of Stockton, died after suffering a medical emergency and getting into a “brief struggle” with police while he was breaking into a home in the East Oakland hills.

Around 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a report of a residential break-in near the 11000 block of Ettrick Street, according to a statement from OPD. Officers were also notified of a person who was experiencing a “medical emergency,” whom they believed to be the same person breaking into the house.

Officers arrived and engaged in a “brief struggle” while trying to detain Martin, according to OPD. After Martin was taken into custody, police said, he became unresponsive.

Paramedics arrived, rendered medical aid, and drove Martin to a nearby hospital. “Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital,” OPD wrote. The cause of death has not yet been released.

The officer or officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave, Oakland officials said. OPD’s Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Bureau and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the in-custody death.

Mykah Montgomery, chief of staff for the Police Commission, told The Oaklandside that the Community Police Review Agency is also investigating the incident.

“At this time, we have no additional information as the City begins its investigation process,” wrote Montgomery.

The Oaklandside emailed OPD’s media team, asking for more information about the incident that led up to Martin’s death. We will update this story if we learn more.

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, Mayor Barbara Lee extended her condolences to Martin’s family and loved ones.

“We mourn the loss of Doug Martin, an Oaklander who had a distinguished NFL career and tragically passed away Saturday morning,” she said. “My office has reached out to Mr. Martin’s family. They have asked for privacy during this time.”
