San Jose sergeant walks out of hospital after being shot in the head during crime spree

A multi-county crime spree ended Wednesday with a suspect killed and a San Jose police sergeant shot in the head. The sergeant was released from the hospital on Thursday.The 13-year veteran sergeant was initially listed in critical but stable condition, but was reportedly in “good spirits” after an encounter with a suspect who had been in two previous shootouts with law enforcement in San Benito County on Wednesday.The sergeant escaped the encounter with a skull fracture.The officer was released from the hospital on Thursday, wearing a bandage, escorted by fellow San Jose Police Department officers to applause.“Under fire, wounded and under extreme stress, his training and resolve kicked in,” SJPD Chief Paul Joseph said of the sergeant, who shot and continued to engage the suspect. “Only a person with a warrior spirit could fight through an encounter like that and live.”It began with a carjacking from a dealership in San Jose by suspect Mohamed Husien, 30, of Davis. Husien then drove to Hollister, where there were two shootouts with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and the Hollister Police Department.It ended in San Jose when Husien crashed near Julian Street and Highway 87, exited, and exchanged gunfire with officers. The San Jose sergeant was shot, and Husien tried to steal a police car, got out almost immediately, then tried to steal another vehicle but was run over by a police vehicle and shot, police said. He was declared dead at the scene.
