On Tuesday the Associated Student Government (ASG) at Fresno City College held its first meeting of the spring semester in the senate chambers of the student lounge. The meeting introduced the current members of the executive board, senators and advisors.
ASG is a body of student volunteers that helps the college organize events and collaborate with faculty with the primary goal of serving students and meeting their needs.
Miguel Barrita is the president for the second semester with Reanna Carlson as the vice president.
Gurbhagatt Singh Bains is the Inter-Club Council Chair, Natalia Montelongo is the Student Representative, Aiden Pena is the Treasurer and opinion editor of the Rampage Miley Araujo is the Communications Officer.
Senators for this semester are Adrianna Sanchez, Jeremiah Sanchez, Daniel Valdivia, Esmeralda Garcia Lopez and Gabriel Escheveste.
ASG meetings are broken into 12 sections.
During the open forum section of the meeting, anyone could address the student government. Suzie Nitzel, who is the chair of the Program Review Committee, spoke up.
“We cannot continue to run the committee with an updated membership and updated Rules of Order unless we have so placing on a future agenda allows the process to move forward,” Nitzel said.
The Program Review Committee is a group at FCC that reviews instructional programs, such as classes, to make sure that they follow the college’s guidelines and academic standards.
The ASG members noted the address then moved on to appointments, in which there were none. Appointments are essentially a way of bringing someone on to the ASG board.
Section eight are reports from each member of ASG about events and work that have been completed or events attended on campus and off campus.
Treasurer Pena announced during the reports section that the budget for this upcoming semester. The Student Rep Fee is a $2 donation that ASG members make to support both the Student Senate for California Community Colleges and the local Student Body Association.
The total they receive in student representative funds is $86,509.
The general funds for ASG is $185,539.82.
Section nine is unfinished business that announces the events and tasks for the upcoming week. Section 10 is new business that goes over ideas and future ASG related events.
For the new business section, the board then discussed the Riverside Advocacy Conference which was held from December 5-7.
The Riverside Advocacy Conference was an event hosted in Fresno by the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. It was held to teach local student governments about leadership and civic engagement. Board members expressed the importance of the conference and shared what they had learned.
ASG members also wanted to hold an outreach at West Fresno Campus, where they can collaborate with other community organizations and share personal experiences.
Treasurer Pena emphasized updating ASG social media, particularly the Instagram account, where upcoming events and a promo video about the government body will be posted.
