BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 78-year-old man in an electric wheelchair died after being struck by a truck in Lake Isabella Thursday night.

The California Highway Patrol said on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at around 5:58 p.m., officers were called to Lake Isabella Boulevard and Crestview Avenue regarding a crash involving a vehicle and a person in an electric wheelchair.

CHP said a preliminary investigation found that a 72-year-old male was driving a 2002 Toyota Tundra northbound on Lake Isabella Boulevard, approaching Crestview Avenue.

According to CHP, for reasons still under investigation, a 78-year-old man in an electric wheelchair crossed Lake Isabella Boulevard in an easterly direction directly into the path of the Toyota.

The Toyota struck the pedestrian, causing severe injuries.

Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

CHP said the driver of the Toyota remained on scene and was cooperative with investigators.

According to CHP, the use of alcohol and/or drugs was not a factor in this crash.
