Fresno Unified School District Trustees will receive double the amount of pay after the recent passage of a state assembly bill.

The pay is increasing from $ 2,100 a month to about $ 4,500 a month.

This is a move that has not happened since the 1980’s.

The trustees debated the change in pay and how it is related to the projected budget deficit in Fresno Unified.

This comes as teachers continue to leave for better pay, and after the district approved early retirement for nearly 600 employees.

A move expected to save more than $56 million over the next five years.

The opportunity is for every board across the state to better compensate trustees for the time they give to research, public commitments, training, and access to the schools in their district.

The adjustment moves the current trustee stipend from $2,100 to $4,500 a month, bringing their pay for this job to 54,000 a year.

The change goes into effect at the beginning of February.

It is dependent upon school enrollment, so if that drops significantly in the years to come, the stipend finances will drop too.

A stipend is not a salary.
