Over 20,000 attendees at Hornet Stadium saw the Sacramento State football team win a high scoring match against Northern Colorado 40 to 35 on Saturday night.
Following the game was a fireworks display and a post-game mini concert from rapper Lil Yachty.
While the stage was being set up in the endzone during the fireworks display, many attendees rushed the field to get a better view of the rapper. People were coming from the bleachers and surrounding areas rushing to get to a spot where they could hear Lil Yachty.
The rapper didn’t perform long and ended his set early post-game due to misconduct, according to President Dr. Luke Wood.
Wood wrote on Instagram, “The postgame concert concluded earlier than planned due to behavior from some community members (not our students) that did not meet our standards of decorum.”
He wrote that the rapper wanted to continue, but the university prioritized safety and security, so the concert ended early.

Sac State started implementing post game concerts this season and already had three concerts prior to Lil Yachty’s short performance.
The university started booking artists to perform after football games to enhance student experience, according to Shawki Moore, assistant director for president projects and strategic partnerships.
Moore said the school came up with a student survey called “Operation Lit” which focused on what would make community events “great.”
What came out of the survey was students wanting more concerts, particularly hip-hop, pop and R&B, he said.
“As with the buzz around our football team and just general athletics, bringing in the new coach, the Go-Go offense, just the excitement around athletics,” Moore said. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to combine athletics and what the students wanted, which was concerts.”
Moore said the funding for the event comes from the same funds for events like Hornet Fest that the school puts on at the beginning of semester.
“These funds can only be used for student experiences and different events,” he said. “So we decided that given the data that we’ve got, to kind of shift some of those funds to be able to go to these concert series.”
Sac State student and psychology major Isis McDonald said before the homecoming game that it’s very exciting to see artists like Lil Yachty coming to her school to perform.
“I think bringing artists will definitely bring a good crowd, and it’s good advertisement for people to go to school, especially Sac State,” she said. “Because Sac State is a very good school, I think it should get all the support that it needs and deserves.”
The concert series will continue following the next two home games against Montana and Idaho. Rapper Quavo and rapper and singer Blxst are the next two artists set to perform.
“I think that we are really trying to grow a movement here at Sacramento State, and it’s not just going to happen on our student campus,” Moore said.” We want to get the community involved, and that’s why we’ve been doing some partnerships with local influences to let people know that Sacramento State is a place to be.”
Wood added in the Instagram post that a revised plan is being developed for Friday’s game against Montana.
