FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — The Fresno State men’s basketball team threatened late, yet the Bulldogs could not muster one more comeback in a 68-57 loss to Grand Canyon at the Save Mart Center on Saturday.
Freshman DeShawn Gory scored the last of his team-high 20 points with 2:30 to play, cutting the Antelopes’ lead to 58-55.
But the Bulldogs did not make another basket for the rest of the game. They only shot 30% from the field (16-for-53) and 22% from 3-point range (5-for-23).
Grand Canyon, coming off wins over nationally-ranked Utah State and conference leader San Diego State, led for 37 minutes. But Fresno State still made the ‘Lopes sweat.
An 11-0 Bulldog run erased Grand Canyon’s lead early in the 2nd half. What prevented the ‘Dogs from holding onto the lead was a physical mismatch in the paint.
The ‘Lopes outrebounded them, 47 to 33, including 17 to 9 on the offensive glass. As a result, Grand Canyon scored 21 second-chance points to Fresno State’s four.
Earlier in the day, the Fresno State women’s basketball team lost to Colorado State, 68-55.
