With its sunny, mild weather and close access to some of California’s best snow, Bishop is a charming winter getaway from the Bay Area.
In fact, SFO is one of the few airports that offers direct flights to Bishop taking just over an hour. Each winter, United Airlines runs direct flights nearly every day, and it’s not too late book a trip.

Currently, United Airlines is operating direct flights to Bishop Airport (BIH) from San Francisco and Denver airports.
From now through April 4th, 2026, you can hop aboard a flight from SFO every day of the week except for Tuesdays. On Saturdays from Feb. 14th through April 4th, United will run two flights between BIH and SFO.
While Uber and Lyft do not operate at Bishop Airport, travelers can use ESTA’s Dial-A-Ride service, shuttles, or taxis. Car rentals are also available through Enterprise, but make sure you reserve in advance.
Alternatively, the winter drive to Bishop from San Francisco takes about 6.5-7 hours via US-50 East and US‑395 South.

Bishop’s position in a sunny valley makes for nearly year-round sunshine with about 335 sunny days annually. Winter temps are mild, typically ranging from 50–60°F, and snowfall in town is minimal, making it a comfortable and accessible winter destination.
The surrounding mountains typically see heavier snow, and so far the 2025-26 winter season has brought decent but below-average snowfall. Ski areas, such as nearby Mammoth Mountain, are up and running.
With Bishop’s proximity to both low- and high-elevation nature areas, visitors can enjoy a range of activities with and without snow. Whether it’s fly-fishing in the Lower Owens River, soaking at Keough’s Ditch hot spring, or cross-country skiing at Lake Sabrina, there’s plenty to do for every type of outdoor enthusiast.
