Big Third Quarter Helps Cal Improve To 4-0 On Season
BERKELEY – The No. 4 California women’s water polo team broke open a close game by scoring five consecutive goals in the third quarter and defeated No. 9 Fresno State 15-11 on Saturday on the first day of the inaugural Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Golden Bears (4-0), who have beaten three top 10 opponents in their first four games of the season, led 9-6 at halftime before blanking the Bulldogs 5-0 in the third period to take control. Sophomore Rosalie Hassett had a dominant performance with four goals, two steals and two assists to lead Cal’s efforts.
Freshman Despoina Drakotou, the reigning MPSF Newcomer of the Week, made a case to repeat with three goals and two assists while junior Feline Voordouw also had three goals and a steal. Junior Nieve Courtney added a goal and two assists and a steal.
The teams took turns scoring to open the first quarter before Cal scored five in a row to make it 8-3 midway through the second. Fresno State stayed close before the Bears’ third-quarter run gave them a comfortable advantage.
Freshman Marina Brown scored her first career goal in the fourth quarter.
Cal closes out the weekend with a matchup against No. 12 San Jose State.
