The season has been a massive success thus far for the Bakersfield Condors. An influx of talented, almost NHL-ready prospects has the team sitting with an impressive 22–12–6 record, though a strong Pacific Division leaves them in third place.

One of the biggest reasons why they have been successful is forward Josh Samanski. In his first professional season in North America, the German-born forward has immediately impressed with his strong two-way play and offensive inclinations. He has clearly impressed the right people as the Edmonton Oilers have just announced that he has been recalled to the NHL.

In 39 games in the AHL, Samanski has seven goals and 28 points, placing him fourth in team scoring.

In a corresponding move, the Oilers have loaned Isaac Howard back to Bakersfield, where he joins as the reigning AHL rookie of the month.

The biggest reason for this call-up seems to be to offer a reward for a player who has done everything right so far this season. He has transitioned well back to the North American ice surface after playing a couple of junior seasons in Ontario between 2018 and 2020, he has contributed positively on both sides of the puck, and now we get a chance to see what type of NHL player Samanski could be.

He has been playing centre in the AHL, showing some strong face-off skills, and with one of the Oilers’ biggest roster holes being centre depth while they wait for Adam Henrique to return, some time for Samanski in the 3C or 4C role is a great audition to see if he might be able to slide in to that spot next season.

There is also the obvious appeal of placing him on the wing with fellow countryman Leon Draisaitl, as the two seemed to connect well off the ice in the preseason and will likely spend time together in the upcoming Olympic tournament as Samanski made Team Germany.

The tricky part is the obvious lack of ice time and opportunity that prospects seem to get on this roster. It may be difficult for Samanski to receive much of an opportunity to showcase his talent.
