FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — An open-ended strike involving health care workers represented by the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals began at 7 a.m. Monday, as negotiations with Kaiser Permanente continue.
Kaiser Permanente officials say the striking employees represent about 3% of Kaiser’s health care professionals in Northern California, or roughly 2,800 workers. The union’s members include nurse anesthetists, certified nurse midwives, acupuncturists, physician assistants, occupational, speech and physical therapists.
The strike is taking place at Kaiser Permanente facilities across Northern California, including in Fresno.
Despite the labor action, Kaiser Permanente says hospitals, emergency rooms and medical offices will remain open, and that most appointments, procedures and care will continue uninterrupted. Kaiser said it will contact members if their appointment or services need to be rescheduled
Kaiser officials say they have agreed with the union to return to the bargaining table and are looking forward to finalizing new contracts.
Kaiser Permanente has been negotiating with the union for more than seven months.
The talks are taking place amid rising health care costs, while millions of Americans risk losing access to health coverage without federal subsidies.
Kaiser Permanente officials say no facilities or departments are currently closed because of the strike.
