Several homes in Sunnyvale were evacuated Monday morning after a vehicle crashed into a residence, causing a natural gas line leak, authorities said.

The crash and gas leak happened in the area of 700 Winstead Court, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) said at about 9:45 a.m.

In an update just before 11 a.m., DPS said the gas leak had been “mitigated” by PG&E.

All residents in the area, except those in the structure that the vehicle slammed into, were later allowed to return home, DPS said.

DPS initially said a school in the area was being evacuated but later clarified to say it was temporarily placed under a shelter-in-place order.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. The driver suffered minor injuries, DPS said.
