San Diego plans to remove structure from cliff overlooking Black’s Beach
The city of San Diego is looking to remove a makeshift shelter once thought to be a homeless encampment that has been installed on a bluff overlooking Black’s Beach in La Jolla.
The structure, below the Torrey Pines Gliderport, appears to have a roof along with framing on its sides.
City staff was alerted to the structure Jan. 10 by local lifeguards, and the city conducted two investigations into the location and the structure itself. Staff determined the structure is not a homeless encampment and shows no signs of human habitation.
City spokesman Matthew Hoffman said “the city is currently evaluating the most appropriate course of action to remove this unpermitted structure. … [The Department of] Parks & Recreation is responsible for this area and is coordinating with other city departments to determine the safest and least impactful method for removal.”
The structure, Hoffman said, “is located down a steep and potentially unstable cliffside, which presents safety concerns for city staff. Due to these conditions, removal will require a specialized approach to ensure the work can be completed safely.”
Thus, a timeline for the removal was not immediately available.
