FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A person was hit and killed Monday just after midnight on Highway 99 after multiple reports of a man running in and out of traffic.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Toyota Prius stopped in the fast lane on southbound Highway 99, heading east on Highway 180. The driver was reportedly seen running from the area.
Officers found the Prius unoccupied, with its engine running and the driver’s door open. CHP said the vehicle did not appear to be involved in a crash and showed no damage. It was removed from the roadway.
About 35 minutes later, at 12:45 a.m., CHP received calls about someone running through lanes of traffic on south Highway 99 near Fresno Street.
A few minutes after that, callers reported the man had been hit by a vehicle south of Belmont Avenue.
Investigators determined the person, a 37-year-old man, had been walking in the traffic lanes when a 22-year-old man driving a Subaru Impreza hit him.
Emergency crews pronounced the man dead at the scene.
CHP says the Subaru driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and transported to the hospital for his injuries.
It is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the man’s death.
The crash remains under investigation.
