We’re learning more about an incident involving former NFL player Doug Martin who died in Oakland police custody over the weekend.
Martin was 36 years old, a former All-Pro running back for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Police say before he died, he was involved in a break-in at a home, where a struggle occurred with officers trying to detain him.
“I have never seen such a large police presence,” said Lynne Belmont.
Belmont from Oakland is talking about an incident which happened early Saturday morning, a break-in at her neighbor’s home on Ettrick Street. Belmont says the homeowner was terrified about the intruder.
“To be violated like that, waking out of a deep sleep, I can only imagine how traumatized she is,” Belmont added.
Oakland police say the suspect was Doug Martin, who lived in Stockton in Northern California, and died a short time after police responded to the home.
In a statement, OPD said:
“Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland. While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics responded to the scene, provided medical aid, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died.”
