LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) – The Long Beach School District approved a reconfiguration of its elementary schools. Officials said the move is a way to address growth as more families move to the city.
Starting next school year, Quarles Elementary will house students in pre-kindergarten through first Grade.
Students in second through fourth grades will attend Harper-McCaughan Elementary, and students in fifth and sixth grades will attend Reeves Elementary.
The way the Long Beach School District is set up now, students in pre-kindergarten through third grade attend Reeves or Quarles elementary schools. All students then funnel into Harper-McCaughan for fourth through sixth grade.
The change makes a linear pathway, with each school having a group of grades for the entire city.
District officials said this setup helps each school better support the academic, social, and physical needs of the students at each age level.
“This reconfiguration strengthens our ability to grow our system of excellence by ensuring every child receives instruction tailored to their developmental needs,” Superintendent Dr. Talia Lock said. “It strengthens collaboration among our educators, creates stronger instructional pathways aligning our practices across campuses, and supports a more cohesive journey for students as they progress through elementary school.”
The district held meetings to gather feedback before making the change.
This reconfiguration marks the second time in the last five years that the district zones have shifted in Long Beach.
