BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Bakersfield police released body-worn video showing the moments leading to an officer-involved shooting on Latina Drive back in December 2025. The shooting left the suspect, identified as Fabian Lopez, in critical condition.

The Bakersfield Police Department said on Monday morning, December 29, 2025, at around 2:15 a.m., a two-officer Bakersfield Police Department patrol unit conducted a vehicle code enforcement traffic stop in the area of Mohawk Street at Siena Lane. The vehicle the officers were attempting to stop eventually yielded at Latina Drive and Pisa Way.

Police said a man inside the stopped vehicle ran off on foot eastbound on Latina Drive. When the officer caught up to the suspect, a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, the suspect allegedly took out a handgun and pointed it at the officer.

The body-worn camera showed the officer running after the suspect. Video also showed the officer discharging his gun and the suspect allegedly pointing a gun at the officer.

The suspect is seen on the video getting up from the ground and proceeding to allegedly point the gun at the officer. The officer is heard demanding the suspect to drop the gun and discharge his firearm.

Officers provided medical aid to the suspect until relieved by emergency medical services. The suspect, identified as Fabian Lopez, was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition.

Police said when Lopez is discharged, he will be booked into the Lerdo Jail Facility for multiple counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and firearm-related charges.

Police identified the officer who discharged his gun as Officer Pedro Sarabia.

Sarabia has been with the Bakersfield Police Department since November 6th, 2023, and has no prior officer-involved shootings.

He was placed on routine administrative leave.

Police said conclusions about the officer’s actions with regard to law and policy will not be made until the investigation is complete and all facts are known.
