Thick fog is believed to have played a role in a 43-vehicle pileup on a Central Valley highway Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Nine people were taken to local hospitals following the collision, which happened at about 8 a.m. on eastbound Highway 58 outside Bakersfield, the CHP said. The victims’ injuries ranged from minor to major.
Witnesses reported “extremely dense” fog in the area, the CHP said. Visibility estimates were between 50 to 60 feet.
The CHP shared the following advice for driving in foggy conditions.
Slow down and increase following distance
Use low beams
Avoid sudden stops or lane changes
Delay or postpone travel
