(FOX40.COM) — Fog was likely a factor in the 43-vehicle pileup on Highway 58 near Bakersfield that sent several people to area hospitals, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident, which happened around 8 a.m., just east of Towerline Road on Tuesday, triggered a mass-casualty response by local emergency personnel. Nine people were transported to four hospitals, with injuries ranging from major to minor.

Investigators believe the weather may have been a contributing factor, CHP officers announced. Witnesses reported “extremely dense fog” with visibility estimated between 50 and 60 feet.

The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours. All lanes were reopened around noon Tuesday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
