For the next couple of days, Northern California is expected to be soaked with rain and snow as the first major storm of the season arrives.The KCRA 3 weather team is issuing Impact Days for both Monday and Tuesday because of how wet weather will impact travel and outdoor activities.Here is what to expect for both rain and snow.Rain forecastMeteorologist Kelly Curran said rain in the Sacramento Valley could begin around noon and push eastward. The heaviest of the rain will be in the afternoon and evening. The region may see up to 1.5 inches of rain through Tuesday.The Foothills are likely to pick up 1 to 2 inches, while higher elevations in the Sierra could receive up to an inch of rain through Tuesday.Southerly wind gusts of up to 25 mph are expected, and if thunderstorms develop in the afternoon, gusts could strengthen.Snow forecastCurran said snow levels will begin around 7,000 feet, with it lowering to 6,500 feet on Tuesday and 5,500 feet by Wednesday morning. The heaviest snow will be south of Highway 50, but areas near Donner Pass could see 8-12 inches.South Lake Tahoe could see 1 to 3 inches, and Sonora could receive up to 30 inches of snow through Wednesday.Chain controls are likely throughout the course of this weather system. When chain controls are in effect, the speed limit is 30 mph on Interstate 80 and 25 mph on Highway 50.Curran said lingering snow showers are possible Wednesday. The KCRA 3 weather team is issuing Impact Days for both Monday and Tuesday because of how wet weather will impact travel and outdoor activities.
Here is what to expect for both rain and snow.
Rain forecast
Meteorologist Kelly Curran said rain in the Sacramento Valley could begin around noon and push eastward. The heaviest of the rain will be in the afternoon and evening. The region may see up to 1.5 inches of rain through Tuesday.
