BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — A Kern County jury on Tuesday convicted Tony Reyes, 43, of two counts of attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, and shooting at an occupied vehicle in 2021.

Prosecutors said on the evening of January 5, 2021, a mom and juvenile daughter saw a crash at the intersection of Wilson Road and South H Street involving a silver BMW driven by Reyes.

Reyes fled the scene immediately after the crash. When the woman involved tried to continue driving in the area, she saw the same silver BMW parked near the area of Custer Avenue and South H Street. The DA said at the time, then Reyes exited the vehicle and ran toward the victims’ moving car while armed with two firearms.

Reyes fired multiple rounds at close distance at the victims’ vehicle. At least one round entered the front passenger window, striking the area where the juvenile victim was seated. Neither victim sustained life-threatening injuries.

Prosecutors said later that night, witnesses reported a “suspicious” silver BMW parked on Marshall Street that showed obvious signs of having been involved in a crash.

Officers learned that the suspect admitted to witnesses that he had been drinking and had previously been involved in a crash on South H Street. Evidence revealed Reyes as the driver of the BMW at the time of the crash.

DA Cynthia Zimmer stated, “Those who act recklessly and inflict violence on families within the community must be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. It is a miracle that neither victim suffered life-threatening injuries, but the trauma of this incident is one they will carry for a lifetime.”

The jury also found true that Reyes personally used and discharged the firearm.
