TEMPE, Ariz. — Triton men’s tennis’ participation in the ITA Southwest Regional Championship came to a close over the weekend. The competition, which runs until Tuesday, was hosted by Arizona State.
The tournament serves as one of the primary qualifiers for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which runs Nov. 18-23 in Orlando. Schools from Arizona, California and Hawai’i make up the Southwest Region.
The Tritons were represented in Arizona by sophomore David Adamson, freshmen Abhinav and Prathinav Chunduru and senior transfer Yaron Guberman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Singles
Adamson and Abhinav Chunduru started in the qualifying portion of the event for singles. Both came one win short of advancing to the main draw.
Chunduru had a bye in the first round while Adamson squared off with an opponent from UC Riverside. The Triton was victorious 6-1, 6-4 before losing 3-6, 2-6 in the next round to San Diego State. Chunduru played a Grand Canyon foe, losing by the same scoreline.
Prathinav Chunduru and Guberman both started the tournament in the singles main draw. The two Tritons were both eliminated in the round of 64 in straight set defeats. Chunduru lost to Arizona’s Oskar Jansson, with Guberman defeated by Pepperdine’s Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida.
One consolation match was held for some players. Abhinav Chunduru secured a 6-1, 6-3 victory against a player from fellow Big West school UC Riverside in his contest. His brother, Prathinav, lost in three sets to UCLA. Guberman also lost his consolation match, falling in straight sets to an opponent from San Diego State.
Doubles
The main doubles draw began in the round of 64. Guberman partnered with Prathinav Chunduru, while Adamson and Abhinav Chunduru played together. Both teams faced fellow Big West schools.
A UC Irvine duo was victorious over Guberman’s team, with the Tritons falling 5-8. Adamson’s pair lost 6-8 to a team from UC Santa Barbara.
No consolation matches were held in doubles.
UP NEXT
The Tritons have one more weekend of fall competition left. Part of the team will be at the ITA West Sectional Championship in Berkeley Nov. 6-9, while the rest will stay home to compete in the Triton Invitational Nov. 6-10. The Triton Invitational will be played at UC San Diego’s Northview Tennis Courts.
