Local world music practitioner Taras Lumiere is packing up his trio to play in The Chapel at the Sonoma Mission this coming Thursday as part of their “Music in the Mission” series.

The 7 p.m. Feb. 5  performance will showcase Lumiere’s song stylings with considerable assistance from two fabulous local musicians, cellist Michael Fesckes and bassist Craig Griffeath.

Lumiere has played The Chapel twice previously and his acoustic-based songs are perfectly suited for the incredibly resonant venue.

With its 185-year-old hard surfaces, which bounce sound around like nobody’s business, The Chapel can be highly problematic for loud electric instruments. But wooden instruments, like this trio’s cellos and acoustic guitars, are warm enough to counter the harsh sonic effects of the room.

Vocals are particularly impressive in The Chapel and Lumiere and his trio will deliver there, too.

Lumiere is versed in rock ‘n’ roll, classical, and folk and singer/songwriter styles of music. He will perform his original material, which includes almost 50 personal and introspective songs, with “love and spirit” being the common theme.

“It’ll be exciting playing with a cellist coming from the classical tradition and a bass playing music teacher coming from jazz and swing,” he said via email.

The “Music in the Mission” series benefits the Sonoma/Petaluma Parks, Inc. organization that runs the Sonoma Mission, formally San Francisco Solano Mission.

The nonprofit organization incorporated in June 1982 as a cooperating association of the California State Park Association.

It also oversees the Petaluma Adobe, the Blue Wing Inn, General Vallejo’s Home, the Sonoma Barracks, and the Toscano Hotel.

The music series will continue throughout the season, with concerts held on the first Thursday of each month. Tickets are available at the door.

Garrison / Karla rescheduled

As our entertainment heroes age, things happen and public appearances sometimes need to be rescheduled. It just a good thing that our abilities to attend any event, either seated or standing room only, are just as strong as ever.

Yeah, right.

The Jan. 12 appearance by Garrison Keillor at the Sebastiani Theatre needed such rescheduling, and its new date is set for Thursday, April 9. In addition, the new date for the highly anticipated show by songstress Karla Bonoff, originally set for Nov. 6 at the Sebastiani, is now rescheduled to 7:30 p.m. March 6 at the big house.

O’Hara Brothers

The Fabulous O’Hara Brothers are making an appearance at Glen Ellen’s Passaggio Wines on Saturday, Jan. 31.

The acoustic / folky trio play familiar songs from familiar eras.

The trio is Dave O’Hara, guitar and vocals; Bo O’Hara, bass guitar and vocals, and bloodline interloper Gary Halter, guitar and vocals.

The tasting room at Passaggio is very well suited for casual conversation, as well as serious listening.

Wines are available to sample and enjoy while partaking in the music. The pleasing familial harmonies kickoff at 2 p.m.

Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards show, long one of my favorite awards shows, airs live at 5 p.m. PT Sunday, Feb. 1 on CBS.

The nominated musical acts defy spell-check and punctuation rules, so editors worldwide are required to ignore those strong impulses to correct.

Nominees for the Record of the Year are Bad Bunny, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar & SZA, Chappell Roan, and ROSÉ and Bruno Mars.

Nominees for New Artist of the Year are KATSEYE, The Marias, Addison Rae, Sombr, Leon Thomas, Alex Warren, Lola Young, and Olivia Dean.

The impressive and refreshingly modern R&B and pop sensibilities of Ms. Dean make her my favorite to receive the award, but nobody asked me.
