Bay Area commuters faced major disruptions during an afternoon of general strike protests Friday, as a medical emergency closed the West Oakland BART station and a gas leak halted Muni light-rail service in San Francisco’s southeast neighborhoods.
BART spokesperson Chris Filippi said a person entered the trackway at West Oakland station and may have been struck by a train. The station was temporarily closed, though some trains continued to pass through on the opposite track.
An X account for the Oakland Fire Department said (opens in new tab) personnel were working to recover a body from the trackway.
Green and Red line service was suspended, Filippi said. Other BART lines remained operational, with trains serving all stations except West Oakland.
“We are still gathering more information and will provide it when we are able,” Filippi said.
Separately, a gas leak near Third Street and Burke Avenue forced Muni to suspend T-Third light-rail service south of the Marin Street stop, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said in social media posts.
Bus shuttles were providing service between Third and Marin streets and the Bayshore and Sunnydale stop, the agency said. Muni advised riders to use the 15 bus line as an alternative.
Both incidents remained under investigation Friday afternoon.
