A car struck three 6th graders near Lake Murray, killing one and seriously injuring two others, according to the San Diego Police Department.
SAN DIEGO — One child is dead and two children were seriously injured after being struck by a car while walking to school near Lake Murray Monday morning, the San Diego Police Department said.
The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m., when a car traveling east on Jackson Drive hit Anne Willow, Jasmine Olsen and Andrew Olsen at an intersection. All three siblings were transported to Rady’s Children’s Hospital, where Andrew Olsen was pronounced dead. One of the girls suffered an open fracture to her left arm, while the other sustained minor injuries.
The children were crossing at the intersection where there is no designated crosswalk, police said. The driver remained at the scene and attempted to render first aid. Police determined that speeding and driving under the influence were not factors in the crash and no arrest was made.
“He just did not see them that early in the morning as he was crossing over this hill,” said Jonathan Lowe, acting captain of the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division.
Police said the children were all 6th graders on their way to Pershing Middle School.
“All of us at Pershing are heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts are with the student’s family and loved ones during this very difficult time,” said Principal Melanie Kray in an email to Pershing Middle School families. Kray said San Diego Unified School District counselors will be on campus this week to assist students, staff and parents.Â
The San Diego Police Department is investigating the accident.
