SDSU at Utah State
When: 10 a.m. Saturday
Where: Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, Logan, Utah
On the air: CBS; 760-AM
Records: SDSU is 15-5, 9-1; Utah State is 17-3, 8-2
Series history: SDSU leads 20-12 but has lost five of the last six in Logan. Utah State swept the series last season, 67-66 at Viejas Arena and 79-71 at the Spectrum.
Aztecs update: The first-place Aztecs were missing two starters for the 73-50 win against Colorado State on Wednesday and both remain iffy for second-place Utah State. Of the two, freshman Elzie Harrington is given the better chance of playing with what coach Brian Dutcher has described as “lower leg pain.” Magoon Gwath has missed the last three games and, Dutcher said, “will probably still be out for the next week or so.” The game at Utah State last February was where Gwath initially injured his knee that ultimately required surgery. The Aztecs didn’t miss either against the Rams, but the Aggies at altitude is a different beast and Dutcher has used his full 11-man rotation in two previous elevation games to great effect. BJ Davis started at the point in place of Harrington and Jeremiah Oden at power forward in place of Gwath. Their metrics have been steadily climbing and now their NET (45), once as low as 127, has nearly caught up to their Kenpom (42). They are in the 30s and 40s in other key metrics as well. Kenpom projects a 78-72 Aggies victory.
Aggies update: They have the best metrics in the Mountain West at 25 in the NET and 30 in Kenpom, and they’ve done it without playing a power conference opponent. The only hiccups were a 74-61 loss at South Florida and back-to-back conference losses at Grand Canyon and home against UNLV. Their best win statistically is 80-77 against VCU on a neutral court. Their most impressive win was 93-68 at Boise State. They spent one week in the Associated Press top 25 at No. 23 before losing at Grand Canyon. They rank eighth nationally in shooting at 51.4% and 30th in Kenpom offensive efficiency. On defense, they play an unorthodox matchup zone that confuses opponents and forces the nation’s eighth-highest turnover rate. Vanderbilt transfer MJ Collins leads the conference in scoring at 19.0 points and has 10 20-point games, shooting 52.9% overall and 41.6% from 3. Mason Falslev is a preseason all-conference selection who averages 16.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 steals (20th in the nation). No one else averages more than 8.5 points.
Next up: Tuesday vs. Wyoming (8 p.m., CBSSN)
