SEATTLE, WASH — San Diego State Track & Field’s distance team put together a record setting Saturday at the Mile City meet inside Dempsey Indoor. Five Aztecs competed in the seeded mile race and walked away with three new top 10 program times as well as a new freshman mile record.

Elliana Lomeli had an outstanding race competing in a heat that featured athletes from Washington State, Utah and Santa Clara. Lomeli cruised to a fourth-place finish in her heat with a final time of 4:58.29 that not only stands as the sixth fastest time in program history but now sits alone as the fastest indoor mile in SDSU history by a freshman.

The duo of Sara Jones and Samantha Wood also had strong performances as well. Wood was in a highly competitive heat against conference opponents from Fresno State, Boise State and Utah State. Wood crossed the finish line in a tight pack with five athletes all within three seconds of each other. Regardless, her strong kick led to a 5:00.99 final time that was not only a personal best but also the seventh fastest time in the program’s history. Jones, coming off a victory in her heat of the 800-meter run yesterday, also etched her name into the record book as well. The sophomore from Gilbert, Arizona took third place in her heat to the tune of a 5:01.76 final time. She moves into the top 10 as well, now the owner of the nineth fastest indoor mile time in the record book.

Rounding out San Diego State’s competitors were Isabella Fauria and Rebekah Niednagel. Fauria had a solid weekend in Seattle finishing her mile in 5:06.65 after a 2:14.09 final time in the 800-meters yesterday. Niednagel returns to San Diego with a new personal best in the mile having run 5:10.30 in her heat.

The Aztecs have now set seven new top 10 program marks (long jump, triple jump, 600m, mile and 4×400 relay) this season already. The team will look to build on this strong momentum over the next week before heading to Reno, Nevada to compete in the Wolf Pack Classic & Combined Event on February 7, at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
