LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – A California robbery suspect was arrested Saturday, Jan. 31, after a traffic stop turned into a chase involving gunfire, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
State troopers stopped 33-year-old Javier Ponziano around 12:30 p.m. on Mines Road. Troopers discovered he had active warrants out of California for robbery and a parole violation.
Troopers called for backup, and Ponziano took off. Troopers shot at the SUV’s tires in an effort to stop the car.
The chase ended near Big Bend Road and Comet when Ponziano crashed into a patrol vehicle. DPS said no one was hurt.
Customs and Border Protection officials were also involved. Ponziano now faces evading arrest charges.
