On the first day of Black History Month, an art exhibit at Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento is highlighting the work of local Black artists, celebrating Black culture through music, paintings and photography. The exhibit was organized by Berry Accius with Voice of the Youth, who said the goal was to intentionally create space for Black artists. “We got 28 days to make it happen, right? We just wanted to cultivate space that was very intentional,” Accius said. “Why don’t we utilize this space, this art gallery space, and put local Black artists here for Black History Month … found 11 exceptional Black artists, and we cultivated this space very intentionally to represent Black artists in its fullest and highest form.” Arts by Bre, one of the 11 featured artists, said she hopes her work inspires visitors beyond the 28 days of Black History Month.“I never got to study about Black people, especially Black women in art,” she said. “I want to make sure that we’re included in the space when it comes to art and making sure that we’re always represented in that field.”Accius said he hopes visitors leave feeling pride and joy.“Everybody knows we have a legacy that’s long lasting … for people to feel like that Black joy and that Black pride when they come into this gallery,” The exhibit is free to visit during Arden Fair mall hours. This month, artists are going to have featured events at the exhibit, including sip and paint and art talks.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
