Fresno police arrested 12 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence during an enforcement operation Saturday.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, the Fresno Police Department said.

Police said another DUI enforcement operation is scheduled for Feb. 8, with additional patrols and checkpoints planned throughout the year to improve roadway safety.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
