Cub Scout Pack 734 revved up excitement at its annual Pinewood Derby, held Jan. 25 at Solana Pacific Elementary School. Scouts proudly raced miniature cars they designed and built themselves from wooden blocks, plastic wheels, and metal axles, sending them speeding down a steep three-lane track powered purely by gravity.

One of the most anticipated events of the year, the Pinewood Derby teaches scouts valuable lessons in creativity, healthy competition, and good sportsmanship. After racing an impressive 86 cars, Pack 734 celebrated the day with trophies and medals for the fastest finishers, along with special awards for “Best Brakes”, “Best Paint Job”, and “Funniest Design”, according to a news release.

Cub Scout Pack 734 serves girls and boys from Carmel Valley, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas. The Pack meets monthly and “is proudly sponsored by the Optimist Club of Del Mar–Solana Beach”, the news release stated. Pack 734 is part of the Rancho San Luis Rey District within the San Diego-Imperial Council of Scouting America.
