The Doors’ song in which Jim Morrison sings “People are strange, when you’re a stranger” is a classic. But my wife and I had an experience while visiting Oceanside from Wyoming that gave us a different take on the song.
We somehow ended up high-centering our car on a boulder in a strip mall parking lot.
Suddenly a parade of strangers appeared out of the night. They weren’t strange; they were kind, caring and so neighborly, all asking how they could help. One man showed up with a jack and boards to wedge under a front tire. A wonderful woman went to a nearby gym and recruited six buff young men, who dropped down on hands and knees and dug and wrestled the boulder out from under our car. We were soon on our way with a whole new view of Oceanside and the fantastic folks who live there.
