LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s basketball team will play its second straight road game, traveling to Fresno State for a Tuesday night contest (Feb. 3) at Save Mart Center. The 8 p.m. game will be televised nationally on FS1.
After winning three straight games (vs. Boise State in overtime, at San Jose State, and at Utah State), the Runnin’ Rebels (10-11, 5-5) have now lost three in a row (vs. San Diego State, vs. New Mexico, and at UNR). Tuesday night’s game marks the second meeting of the season between the Runnin’ Rebels and Bulldogs. UNLV won this season’s first meeting, 84-72, on Dec. 20 at the Thomas & Mack Center, which was the MW opener for both teams.
The Runnin’ Rebels are averaging 77.9 points per game and have five players averaging 9.3 points per game or more: Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn (17.5 ppg, 3rd in MW), Kimani Hamilton (11.7 ppg), Tyrin Jones (10.6 ppg), Issac Williamson (9.9 ppg), and Howie Fleming Jr. (9.3 ppg). Jones hurt his shoulder in the first two minutes of the Jan. 27 game vs. New Mexico and did not return. He missed the last game at UNR. Fleming Jr. leads the team in rebounds at 5.7 rpg (8th in MW), and assists at 3.2 apg. Gibbs-Lawhorn is the team’s steals leader at 1.6 spg (5th in MW), while Jones leads in blocks at 1.9 bpg (2nd in MW, 39th nationally).
The Runnin’ Rebels are in their first year under head coach Josh Pastner. Although new to UNLV, he is in his 15th year as a collegiate head coach, having previously led Memphis and Georgia Tech for seven seasons each. He holds a career record of 286-198 (.591).
UNLV’s roster has only one returning player, Jacob Bannarbie, and has welcomed 13 new faces. The newcomers include eight Division I transfers, a former international professional, a junior college transfer, and three freshmen.
MORE ABOUT THE ROSTER: This season’s UNLV squad, which has had to deal with a rash of injuries, returned just one player from 2024-25: redshirt sophomore forward Jacob Bannarbie. The 2025-26 roster added 13 newcomers – eight Division I transfers, a former international professional, a junior college transfer, and three freshmen. The team features four seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen, with a position breakdown of seven guards, six forwards, and a center. Last season, Bannarbie appeared in 19 games (three starts), averaging 1.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 6.6 minutes, and shooting 52.9% from the field on 17 attempts.
ABOUT FRESNO STATE: The Bulldogs (10-11, 4-6) are coming off a road win at Air Force (79-62) on Saturday. Fresno State has lost two of its last three contests, but has won three of its last five. The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Jake Heidbreder (17.1 ppg, 5th in MW) and Zaon Collins (12.7 ppg). Wilson Jacques is the team’s rebounding leader (8.5 rpg, 4th in MW), followed by DeShawn Gory (5.9 rpg). Collins is the team’s assists (4.9 apg, 2nd in MW) and steals (1.9 spg, 4th in MW) leader. The Bulldogs rank seventh in the country in 3-point percentage defense, limiting their opponents to just 27.7% from 3-point range. Fresno State is 7-5 at home this season. Fresno State was picked to finish 11th in the Mountain West’s preseason poll. The Bulldogs’ 15-man roster is made up of just five upperclassmen. Fresno State went 6-26 overall last season, finishing 10th in the MW at 2-18. Head coach Vance Walberg is in his second season at the school with a record of 16-37 (.302) and is in his 4th season overall as a collegiate head coach with a career record of 30-72 (.222).
LAST TIME VS FRESNO STATE: In this season’s first meeting between the two teams on Dec. 20 at the Thomas & Mack Center, which was the Mountain West opener for both teams, UNLV had four players score in double figures, led by Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn’s then-career-high 28 points. Kimani Hamilton scored 16 of his 20 in the second half, Tyrin Jones added 18, and Howie Fleming Jr. scored 11. Fresno State also had four in double-figure scoring, led by Wilson Jacques’ double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. In a game that featured six lead changes, four ties, and multiple big runs by both teams, the deciding one was a 14-4 spurt late in the second half by UNLV to turn a 70-66 lead into an 84-70 advantage with 38 seconds to go. UNLV shot 61.5% (16 of 26) from the field in the second half. The Runnin’ Rebels made 52.2% (12 of 23) of their shots in the first half and finished the game at 57.1% (28 of 49). UNLV recorded 20 assists on 28 made field goals (71.4%).
