SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — The family of a 15-year-old girl who was killed during a shooting in San Francisco on Friday evening held a vigil Sunday at the intersection where the shooting happened.

They gathered near the intersection of Golden Gate and Laguna in San Francisco, where friends, family and classmates honored Jayda Mabrey with pink balloons, pink candles and pink flowers.

“Street violence took my daughter. Something she didn’t have (anything) to do with. Like, how does this happen? In a park, she is supposed to be safe here,” Jayda’s mother, Augustina Herrera, said.

Two other juvenile victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but Jayda died in the hospital from her gunshot wounds. The family says she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

“My daughter was at a playground, she wasn’t here to fight,” Herrera said. “Now I have to live without my daughter for the rest of my life. That was my baby.”

Pastor Jeffery Brannen with St. Andrews Mission Baptist Church knew the family and was with them Friday night.

“The Second Amendment, I understand all that, having rights to guns. But we’ve got get the guns of the streets,” Pastor Brannen said. “We just got to do better in educating our children about guns, and the damage that it does. Such as what just happened.”

People shared stories of Jayda at the vigil. They called her strong, loyal and a role model for younger kids. She was on track in school and was college bound.

“Just how she brightened up a room with her smile. Her laugh was contagious. I love my baby,” Jayda’s cousin Kennedy said.

“Stop the gun violence. It’s stupid. We just have to do better as a community,” another cousin, Gary Carter, said.

The vigil ended with a balloon release as a final farewell to Jayda.

“I love my daughter and all my kids. We have been through a lot together. She was the reason why I smiled every day,” Herrera said.

No arrests have been made, and police haven’t released any suspect information.
